For double elimination the formula is 2n-2. So 8 teams play 14 matches, 16 teams play 30, and 32 teams play 62. The grand final may add one bracket reset match if the lower-bracket team wins the first final.
Teams that lose in the upper bracket drop into the lower bracket and keep playing. Lose twice and you are eliminated. The lower-bracket winner meets the upper-bracket winner in the grand final.
Yes. Enable the reset rule and the grand final extends to a second match if the lower-bracket finalist wins the first. This keeps the format fair since the upper-bracket team has not yet lost.
It works well for 4 to 32 participants. Below 4 it has too few matches; above 32 the schedule gets long. For larger fields a multi-stage groups-into-knockout is usually a better fit.
